East Carolina University has many successful athletic programs. But there’s a unique relationship between eastern North Carolina and the sport of baseball, and it just means more around here. ECU has had a consistent level of success over the years that has made it a national brand in the college baseball world. A perennial NCAA tournament team and often ranked in the top 25 and even top 10, ECU baseball continues to rank among the nation’s best and this year is no different. D1 baseball has given the Pirates a #11 ranking in their top 25 preseason poll for the 2024 season.
Head Coach Cliff Godwin enters his 10th season at ECU and his 2024 squad looks to have the hitting and pitching to host another NCAA tournament regional in Greenville. Coach Godwin’s Pirate squad has won four consecutive American Athletic Conference regular season championships. These last four Pirate teams have all competed in the NCAA regionals and ECU has played in a super-regional three of the last four seasons. In 8 seasons (2020 season was canceled due to covid), four of Godwin’s teams have reached a super-regional, including the 2022 team hosting Texas at ECU’s Clark-Leclair Stadium.
The number 23 was worn by Coach Keith LeClair as both a player and coach. LeClair was the head coach at ECU from 1997 to 2002. In just 5 seasons at ECU, LeClair led his teams to four conference championships and four NCAA tournament appearances. LeClair brought passion, determination, and a goal to make it to the College World Series in Omaha. LeClair passed away in 2006 after a five-year battle with ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Cliff Godwin played for LeClair and wears number 23 in his honor. Coach Godwin returned to ECU in 2015 and has become ECU’s most successful baseball coach in the rich history of the program. The dream of Omaha is still alive and getting closer with each season. Will this be the year?
The 23 Club was started by a group of former ECU baseball players and ECU baseball supporters. We hope you will join us in creating NIL opportunities for the members of this year’s ECU baseball team. These guys work hard every day in hopes of winning a conference championship, NCAA regional championship and eventually that elusive super regional championship to finally punch their ticket to Omaha. Please consider giving a monthly or one time contribution. Our expenses have been handled by the members of the 23 Club committee so 100% of your contribution goes directly to the players on this year’s team. We will see you in Clark-LeClair Stadium soon!
The 23 Club serves as a support and facilitating system for ECU Baseball in the new NIL era so that current student baseball players can be compensated for the use of their name, image and likeness. The 23 Club was formed to handle contributions from alumni and fans and provide a platform for NIL opportunities at ECU. 100% of your contribution to The 23 Club will go to NIL opportunities for current ECU student baseball players.
